Aegean Records, owned and operated by recording artist George Michael, offered CD-quality singles for purchase and download from its Web site in Liquid Audio(R) format. Aegean Records was the first European record company to adopt the Liquid Audio secure electronic music-delivery system, operating the label through the Aegean Web site at http://www.aegean.net/. On Nov. 1, 1997, Aegean Records offered its first Internet single "Chameleon" from up-and-coming British pop group Trigger.
Music fans were able to listen to and purchase "Chameleon" as a Liquid Track(TM) using the Liquid MusicPlayer(TM), which features Dolby Digital, CD-quality sound, and ensures full anti-copy and anti-piracy protection.
Future offerings from the Aegean Web site included music from George Michael, as well as newcomers Toby Bourke and Primitiva. In addition, the label planned concert tickets, merchandise and band photographs for sale directly from the Internet. "Aegean Records' use of the Liquid Audio technology is a great example of how labels and artists can add to their existing distribution methods," said Scott Burnett, vice president of marketing for Liquid Audio. "George Michael has realized his vision of the Internet as a vehicle for music commerce and, in doing so, has broken ground for both major and independent labels to take advantage of this new channel for music promotion and sales."
