Having been friends with Seventies rock superstar Elton John since the days of Make It Big, George was delighted when his former role model asked him to provide vocal support for the seasoned star's comeback album, Ice On Fire. George shared backing vocals with Elton and Davey Johnstone, and the overall Eighties appeal was heightened with the appereance of singer / songwriter Nik Kershaw an guitar. "Nikita" is an easy-going tale of love divided by distance, whose bland and slow-paced melody reaches a synthetic climax, featuring George's sweet falsetto which glodes over the closing chorus. This song was released as the first single from Ice On Fire and rested a couple of placed behind "I'm Your Man" in the Top 10 in late 1985.
The second single from Ice On Fire, "Wrap Her Up", included several veteran musicians from the days of Wham! as well as George; Charlie Morgen, Paul Spong, Raul D'Oliveira and Rick Taylor among others. The backing vocals also included Kiki Dee, who joined Andrew Ridgeley on Elton and George's performance of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" at Live Aid that same year. "Wrap Her Up" is a high-spirited rocky tributre to women the world over, with George lending particular falsetto assistance throughout the verses. This jaunty track culminates in a frenetic free-for-all where the singers nominate their favourite females: Samantha Fox, Grace Jones, Joan Collins, Nance Reagan and Shirley Temple to name but a few - even George's frequent companion "Miss Pat Fernandez" gets a mention! Considerably involved in this project, George also made a brief appearance in the accompanying video, and this venture merely pinpointed the restrictiob that Wham! as a group was imposing on George as an artist. As 1985 changed to 1986 the increasingly successful George could be heard on no less than four singles in Top 20 with "Wrap Her Up", re-release of "Last Christmas" and "Do They Know It's Christmas ?", and the current Wham! anthem "I'm Your Man".
