Famously inspired by a misspelt note from Andrew, "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" rapidly became one of the best-loved Wham! releases, quite possibly because it was 'that much more stupid than anything else!' George himself later remarked. "Go-Go" procured the group's first major chart success and it was Number 1 hit that really broke Wham! in the United States. George particularly revelled in volleying typically American music straight back to the Americans. Fromthe very first 'Jitterbug', Wham! produce a sleek, well crafted piece of pristine pop which is a million miles away from the juvenile whooping and bragging as heard on Fantastic.
The most striking transformation is the confidence that George demonstrates with the enormous strenght of his vocal delivery; gone are the days of rap, replaced with a maturity that was to become one of the most remarkable voices in the industry. This polished jive cofection introduces the predominantlly nostalgic theme to the album, mixing lyrical references to Doris Day and Jetterbugging with frivolous 'boom-boom's and 'bang-bang's to irresistible effect. The great beauty of this track is that it doesn't aspire to be anything more than pure pop, yet it attains its goal magnificently.
